Sternberg outlines the Three main intelligences; Analytical, Creative and Practical. Schools and universities focus almost entirely on Analytical intelligence by using a process of read, memorize and repeat, then inert exams that do little to guarantee future success. Students with high IQs excel in this environment however good results in these exams are not a predictor of how successful someone will be later in life. Successful intelligence is the kind of intelligence used to achieve day-to-day practical goals. Successfully intelligent people understand their strengths and capitalize on them. They know their weaknesses and compensate or try to correct them. At schools or university the problems are usually numbered and have question marks at the end. The answers are sometimes found at the back of the book! In life, this is far from true, questions and problems are difficult to identify, there are numerous solutions or options and not all solutions are beneficial and can be implemented. Sternberg build’s the case to remind the reader that we need all three types of intelligence. If you are a creative thinker, unconventional in your learning or have a child who is not very academic but shows an entrepreneurial spirit then this book is for you.
